چکیده

Investment cast aerospace components are prone to defects related to solidification process. The hollow columnar-grained aero engine Vane casting, being discussed in this paper, suffers further from extraneous defects such as inclusions, core shift and resultant dimensional deviations. Due to its design complexity and stringent specifications, non-destructive evaluation (NDE) of this component is extremely difficult and critical. Complete inspection, employing different non-destructive testing (NDT) techniques, has been aimed to assess full inspectability and reliability of the components. Radiography, visual/ grain size inspection/ fluorescent dye penetrant test (DPT) after macro etching of the components, and ultrasonic wall thickness measurement (with an accuracy of ±0.02 mm) of the aerofoil are the techniques utilized for complete inspectability. Innovative NDE methods and specially designed equipments have been used for

NASA NDE Applications for Mobile MEMS Devices and Sensors

NASA would like new devices and sensors for performing nondestructive evaluation (NDE) of aerospace vehicles. These devices must be small in size/volume, mass, and power consumption. The devices must be autonomous and mobile so they can access the internal structures of aircraft and spacecraft and adequately monitor the structural health of these craft. The platforms must be mobile in order to ...

Theoretical Explanation for the Empirical Probability of Detection ( POD ) Curve : A Neural Network - Motivated

|For non-destructive testing of aerospace structures, it is extremely important to know how the probability of detecting a fault depends on its size. Recently, an empirical formula has been found which described this dependence. In this paper, we provide the theoretical justiication for this formula by using methods motivated by the neural network approach. I. Formulation of the Problem For non...

Meeting Fracture-based Requirements in the Aerospace Industry

In the aerospace industry, fracture requirements are usually expressed in a document titled "Fracture Control Implementation Plan (FCIP)." The plan specifies the fracture control criteria and procedures to be implemented on a specific program. The primary objective of these controls is to preclude flaw-induced structural failures that could imperil a mission or a Space Transportation System and...
